What is AA?

WHAT IS A.A.?
Alcoholics Anonymous is an international fellowship of men and women who have a drinking problem. It is nonprofessional, self-supporting, nondenominational, multiracial, apolitical, and available almost everywhere. There are no age or education requirements. Membership is open to anyone who wants to do something about his or her drinking problem.

HOW TO GET STARTED

  • Leave for the meeting a bit early; the meeting rooms are sometimes in a basement, or elsewhere, so you may need a few extra minutes to find your way.
  • Relax, you’ll be amazed how easy your first meeting will be.
  • Tell the group this is your first meeting.  They will give you some phone numbers and other contact information, and maybe assign you a temporary sponsor.
  • The AA Meetings are the cornerstone of AA, there you will learn about books and literature, how other members got sober, and stay sober.  There are no attendance requirements, and the whole system is built around the concept of volunteers helping each other stay sober.
The primary purpose of A.A. is to carry our message of recovery to the alcoholic seeking help.  Regardless of the road we follow, we all head for the same destination, recovery of the alcoholic person. Together, we can do what none of us could accomplish alone. We can serve as a source of personal experience and be an ongoing support system for recovering alcoholics.

There is also much information available on the internet. Go to our AA Links PAGE to find out more!
